The Ledge welcomed U.S. Marshals Ron DeWald and Jonathan McCurry, along with K9 Wulf, for an engaging talk and an unforgettable K9 law enforcement demonstration. The visit gave our guests a clear look into how K9 teams train, how they work, and why these partnerships protect our communities every day.
This event reflected what our space stands for. Education, enrichment, and shared understanding. Our hall belongs to the community, and moments like this help it grow stronger.
Learning What a K9 Team Really Does
Marshal DeWald opened the morning by sharing his career path and his journey into K9 work. He explained how K9 teams support law enforcement across West Tennessee, covering a wide geographic area that demands teamwork, trust, and preparation.
During the talk, guests learned that K9 work requires far more than physical strength. It demands consistency, daily training, and a deep bond between handler and dog. Marshal DeWald explained how dogs like Wulf train through play and reward. The work stays structured, but the motivation stays positive.

Meet K9 Wulf
K9 Wulf quickly became the star of the morning. Marshal DeWald introduced Wulf as a young, driven working dog with a strong desire to learn and perform. Wulf showed focus, confidence, and enthusiasm throughout the presentation.
The marshals explained how breeding and early training shape working dogs. These dogs come from lines bred specifically for work, problem solving, and endurance. Wulf showed that dedication in every movement.
Guests saw how handlers guide their dogs with clear commands and calm leadership. The relationship works as a partnership, built through daily effort and trust.
Training Through Trust and Consistency
Marshal McCurry shared his role during training and operations. He spoke about supporting the handler, assisting during deployments, and helping manage safety during high‑risk situations. He also explained his role during training scenarios, including serving as the “decoy” during controlled bite work.
This part of the talk helped guests understand structure. The dogs do not act on impulse. Training teaches them when to engage and when to disengage. Handlers stay responsible for every action the dog takes.
The K9 law enforcement demonstration emphasized safety, control, and accountability. Every movement followed training. Every command served a purpose.

The Outdoor Demonstration
After the indoor presentation, guests moved outside for the live K9 law enforcement demonstration. This moment brought the training to life.
Marshal McCurry suited up with protective equipment, and Marshal DeWald guided Wulf through an apprehension exercise. Wulf followed commands with precision and intensity, then released on cue. The demonstration showed control, discipline, and teamwork in action.

Guests watched closely as Wulf worked with confidence and focus. The demonstration sparked thoughtful questions and respectful discussion. It also showed how preparation protects everyone involved.
Community Questions and Honest Answers
Throughout the event, guests asked thoughtful questions about training, safety, daily routines, and retirement for K9s. The marshals answered every question with care and clarity.
They explained that handlers care for their dogs every day, both on and off duty. These dogs train regularly, receive consistent veterinary care, and retire into loving homes, often with their handlers.
This openness built trust. It reminded everyone that service work requires responsibility, compassion, and long‑term commitment.
