At this month’s Biscuits N Tips, attendees gathered for an important conversation about staying safe, healthy, and independent as we age. Calista Joyce of Home Instead was joined by Melody Brown, RN, of West Tennessee Healthcare Rehabilitation Center to share practical advice on fall prevention, home safety, and resources available throughout our community.
The discussion focused on a reality many families face. Falls can happen to anyone, but as we age, the consequences can become more serious. A fall can lead to injuries, hospital stays, rehabilitation, and a loss of confidence that affects everyday life. The encouraging news is that many falls can be prevented with awareness, planning, and a few changes at home.
Understanding the Risk
One of the key messages from the presentation was that falls are often caused by a combination of factors rather than a single event. Changes in vision, balance, strength, and mobility can all increase risk. Certain medications may also cause dizziness or drowsiness, making it more difficult to move safely throughout the day.
Attendees were encouraged to pay attention to changes in how they feel and move. If balance issues, weakness, dizziness, or fatigue begin to occur, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider before those challenges become larger concerns.

Taking a Fresh Look at Home Safety
Many falls happen in the places we know best. Familiar surroundings can sometimes lead us to overlook potential hazards.
Simple improvements can make a big difference. Clear walkways help eliminate tripping hazards, while adequate lighting makes it easier to move safely throughout the home, especially during nighttime hours. Bedrooms, hallways, and entryways are all areas where better visibility can improve safety.
The speakers also discussed the importance of removing clutter and being mindful of loose rugs, electrical cords, and other obstacles that may create unnecessary risks.
Bathroom Safety Matters
The bathroom remains one of the most common locations for falls. Water, smooth surfaces, and limited space can create challenging conditions even for healthy adults.
Melody Brown discussed several affordable ways to make bathrooms safer. Non-slip mats, grab bars, shower benches, and transfer benches can all improve stability and reduce the chance of injury. These solutions can often be added without major renovations and may help individuals remain independent longer.
Another important reminder involved bath mats. While they can improve comfort, they should be secured properly and checked regularly to ensure they do not become a slipping hazard themselves.

Strength and Movement Are Essential
A strong theme throughout the presentation was the importance of staying active.
As we age, muscle strength naturally decreases if it is not maintained. Regular movement helps support balance, flexibility, coordination, and confidence. Even simple activities such as walking, stretching, participating in exercise classes, or staying engaged in daily routines can help maintain mobility.
The presenters emphasized that keeping muscles active is one of the best ways to reduce fall risk. Movement today helps preserve independence tomorrow.

Staying Connected and Prepared
Technology and communication can also play an important role in personal safety.
Medical alert systems, emergency response buttons, smartphones, and wearable devices can provide quick access to help when needed. For individuals who live alone, these tools provide an added layer of security and peace of mind.
The speakers also encouraged families to establish regular check-ins with loved ones. A simple phone call or daily routine can help identify concerns early and ensure someone is available if assistance is needed.
How Rehabilitation Can Help
West Tennessee Healthcare Rehabilitation Center provides specialized rehabilitation services for individuals recovering from illness, injury, surgery, or a fall-related event.
Melody Brown explained how rehabilitation programs focus on helping patients regain strength, improve mobility, and safely return home. Through physical therapy, occupational therapy, skilled nursing care, and personalized treatment plans, many patients are able to rebuild confidence and return to the activities they enjoy.
The ultimate goal is simple: helping people live safely, independently, and with the highest possible quality of life.
Prevention Is Always Better Than Recovery
One statistic shared during the discussion stood out. A single fall can result in significant medical expenses, emergency room visits, rehabilitation stays, and lengthy recovery periods. Beyond the financial impact, falls can affect confidence, mobility, and independence.
That is why prevention matters.
Whether it is reviewing medications, improving lighting, removing hazards, staying active, or asking for help when something feels different, small steps today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow.
